First comes S, since it helps form most plurals and is also the most common letter to begin a word. Remember, it’s not just forming a word but also being able to play it on the board.
If we assume near-complete word knowledge (as in Scrabble master) then the letters after that are likely the most commonly used letters in the English language. Ignoring the S, the preliminary list is: E, T, A, O, I, N, R, H, L and D.
The O and H drop off because they are less common in 7 & 8-letter words (most bingos.) The G is added, primarily because of common suffixes like -ING and -AGE.
My final ordered list is:
S, E, T, A, I, N, R, L, D, G
A good way to remember the first 7 is the word RETINAS. Don’t forget the all-important blank, since it can be any letter.
