How does zero or double zero in roulette wheel give advantage to the house?

While I was learning basics roulette, I am curious that how does house gets its advantage in roulette by zero or double zeros(American roulette)?
Can we bet on zero(s) and if yes, what is the pay out? Thanks
Thanks John F. Cleared few doubts in my mind.
I would like to hear from others what they feel about this game.

You can bet on the zero. It counts just the same as any other number.
The house edge isn’t so much from the 0 or 00. It’s from the fact that there are actually 37 or 38 numbers on the board, but a straight bet pays off at 35 to 1.
Think of it this way (assuming American roulette). If you put $1 on every available number including 0 and 00, you would have spent $38 . The house will pay the winning number $35, plus the initial $1 bet, for $36 total.
The house will take in $38 and pay out $36, for a profit of $2. In European roulette the profit is $1.
The same concept applies for the outside bets. If you spin the wheel a large number of times, you will find that it averages to 18 reds, 18 blacks, 1 zero and 1 double zero.
If you consistently place $1 on red, for instance, then for every $38 you bet you will win $18 and lose $20 for a net loss of $2.
Please doubt no more. John F. has it perfect. His example of betting $1 on every number is about as clear an explanation as you can possibly get.
Bottom line: There is NO SYSTEM that you will ever think of that hasn’t been thought of before, and there is NO SYSTEM that has ever, or will ever beat roulette in the long run.
Try beating roulette at your peril.
if there was only 36 numbers and NO 0 or 00 then when you make a red /black wager its TRULY a 50/50 proposition
you are just as much favored to lose if you pick red as you are black – as their is 18 red and 18 black out of 36 total numbers
when you add in the 0 and the 00 now when you pick red or black your chances no matter what become either 18 out of 37 or 18 out of 38
nothing you can do can change the fact you are now favored to lose because there are more numbers that can cause you to lose than win
**and the casino skims off the top on all payoffs – if they were nice they would pay you 37 back + 1 if they have 38 numbers on the board – instead they pay you 35+1 so basically every time you win – so do they!**
It’s pretty simple actually: If you were to put $1 on a straight number bet, you only get 36 to 1. However in reality there are 38 numbers.
So, let’s say if you placed $1 on each 36 numbers, including the two zeros, you’d be at a loss, as you put $38 to get $36 back.
